Research Description:

In this internship, the student will undertake an examination of the history of the scientific study of the ancient world as part of an Australian Research Council funded project on the scientific testing of inks on ancient papyri. After initial orientation, the student will conduct research as part of the project to locate and record publications or media reports dealing with scientific study of the material record of antiquity in the pre-modern world (especially before the twentieth century) and curate a bibliography of relevant material. The intended outcome will be a rich data set which would contribute to the publication outcomes of the project, in which the student could potentially take part in the future. Students will also be asked to write a blog post about their internship at the project blog ( The internship will provide an introduction to conducting guided independent research within a research team with larger goals to which the student's work will contribute, and will be of special interest to students with an interest in the scientific study of the ancient world.
