Research Description:

In this internship, the student will undertake archival research on ancient forgeries and the modern forgers of them in nineteenth century media as part of an Australian Research Council funded project on fake papyrus manuscripts (see After initial orientation, the student will conduct research as part of the project to collect data from newspapers and other nineteenth century media in the form of articles which mention either ancient forgeries or the modern forgers who create them, or deal with related themes. The intended outcome will be a rich data set which would contribute to the publication outcomes of the project, in which the student could potentially take part in the future. Students will also be asked to write a blog post about their internship at the project blog ( The internship will provide an introduction to conducting guided independent research within a research team with larger goals to which the student's work will contribute, and will be of special interest to students with interests forgery, the history of the nineteenth century, and the reception of the ancient world in this period.

Discipline major(s) suitable for the internship: Modern History, Media Studies

Desirable skills/attributes/experience: Knowledge of 19th century history and media

Preferred start date: 29 July 2019
