Research Description:

In this internship the student will investigate the reception and forgery of antiquity in nineteenth century Greece, as part of an Australian Research Council funded project on fake papyrus manuscripts (see After initial orientation, the student will conduct research as part of the project to collect data from archival material, including images of private letters held in the British Library in English and modern Greek, and also draw up a bibliography relevant to the topic. The intended outcome will be a rich data set which would contribute to the publication outcomes of the project, in which the student could potentially take part in the future. Students will also be asked to write a blog post about their internship at the project blog ( The internship will provide an introduction to conducting guided independent research within a research team with larger goals to which the student's work will contribute, and will be of special interest to students with knowledge of modern Greek and an interest in the reception of the ancient world in the nineteenth century.

Discipline major(s) suitable for the internship: International Studies (Modern Greek); Modern History

Desirable skills/attributes/experience: Knowledge of modern Greek language and the History of 19th century Greece and Europe
